October 5: VAYA Staff Retreat @ Julian. THANK YOU to those who attended the retreat this weekend. We hope your experience was memorable and inspirational. For those who DID NOT pay your retreat fee, please do so at the NEXT VAYA GBM/Tet Meeting. ALL checks SHOULD be made payable to VAYA (Vietnamese American Youth Alliance). October 8: “Street Cleanup” Committee Meeting @ Broadway Coffee / 4633 Convoy Street / San Diego, CA 92111 (7:00 PM - 8:00 PM). October 9 & 11: VAYA @ SDAFF: VAYA will be attending and co-presenting two movies at this year’s 9th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival: OH SAIGON and THE STORY OF SPIRITS. For those who RSVPed a ticket to see either show, please note that Nikki Lam (VAYA External Vice President) WILL HAVE your tickets ON THE DAY of the screening. You are to meet her 20-30 minutes PRIOR to screening time to pick it up. She should be standing around in front of the entrance, so be on the look out for her. October 11: CHCDC Collaborative Community Development Project Meeting @ Marion Faye Elementary in City Heights (11:30 AM to 3:30 PM). CHCDC will have a big community meeting to discuss a community development plan, in which leaders of various community organization can “adopt” different developmental projects. 8 categories: youth empowerment, education, health, safety issues, etc. CHCDC wants interested organization to take ownership of that project. VAYA 5th Annual Street Cleanup (10/18/08): VAYA will be hosting our 5th Annual Street Cleanup Event scheduled for Saturday 10/18/08 from 7-11 AM. The Cleanup event will start at Hoover High School and end at Colina del Sol Park (more visible on 54th and we’re able to branch out to the general community). The event will conclude with a BBQ Appreciation Picnic at Colina del Sol Park. VAYA Tet 2009 Pageant Mixer (4th Annual Miss Vietnam of San Diego): VAYA will be hosting the “VAYA Tet 2009 Pageant Mixer” at the Santa Fe Room (Balboa Park Club) starting at 5 PM. Come to the “Pageant Mixer” to learn more about the 4th Annual Miss Vietnam of San Diego. Requirements: Vietnamese Background, understand Vietnamese language, and be between the ages of 17-25. Directions/Parking:
- Take Hwy 163 south to Park Blvd, go left at the stop light then left onto President’s Way, which is the next stop light. Continue to the stop sign where you can go straight to park in the Pan American Plaza parking lot or make a right and park in the Organ Pavilion lot.
- The Balboa Park Club is located in the South Palisades area of Balboa Park, just north of the Puppet Theatre.

VAYA’s 5th Annual El Cajon Street Cleanup

What: 5th Annual El Cajon Street Clean up

When: Saturday, October 18, 2008. 8am-12pm

Where: Hoover Highschool on 45th st. and El Cajon blvd.

Why: Get 4 hours of community service and see how Your contributions to the community can not only clean it up, but revitalize the very image of a developing community.
